Born on the cold trout waters around Ketchum, Idaho and tested on the rugged peaks of Sun Valley's Bald Mountain, Steely Zips started because Idaho native and veteran guide Riley Berman was flat-out tired of ending his workdays soaked, shivering, and let down by standard gear. Cotton hoodies turned into heavy, wet sponges. High-end technical shells felt stiff and choked with useless features.
So, he built a tool for the job. The result was The Mule—a powerhouse hoodie tough enough for brutal Rocky Mountain weather, comfortable enough for 14-hour days, and built specifically for the people who live, work, and play in the mountains.
We Do Apparel Differently. On Purpose.
After years in the backcountry, Riley saw firsthand how the outdoor industry had drifted. Big brands chase "new features" no one actually needs just to force you into buying next year’s model. More noise, more waste, less actual function.
We don’t play that game. We don't do planned obsolescence or meaningless annual redesigns. We build our gear the slow way—one hyper-engineered piece at a time, shaped by real-world abuse. We strip away the gimmicks and focus entirely on what keeps you outside longer: unmatched strength, effortless versatility, and fabrics that work as hard as you do.
We only upgrade a product when we’ve actually made it better—not because a corporate calendar says it's time. It’s time for outdoor gear to get back to what matters.
